* The HMMWV, (or Hummer or Hum-vee) replaces the Jeep as the standard vehicle in the U.S. motorpool. Based on a common 1 1/4 ton chassis, the HMMWV can be configured for a variety of different uses from TOW missile carrier to ambulance. The HMMWV was introduced in the 1980's and is now standard in all U.S. forces and Guard units.
Actions in Desert Storm--
HUMVEEs were everywhere in Operation Desert Storm. Besides operating in a transport mode, a number of TOW-equipped HUMVEEs were used to eliminate Iraqi armor during the ground war. Other HMMWV were used in medical evacuation and as communications vehicles. The deserts of Kuwait have provided the HMMWV with a successful combat test for a system that should be in the U.S. inventory for several more decades. In fact, due to the publicity of the Humvee in the Gulf, a civilian variant called the HUMMER will be released to the general public, with the fist buyer being Arnold Schwarzenegger
20,00 of the Army's 59,883 Humvees were deployed in the Gulf War.
